Deathwatch Beetle
These naughty little beetles can be very damaging to oak timber framed buildings, but just as with woodworm, if you get them in your home, they are telling you that you have other issues in your home that need addressing.
The 'specialists' love these and will tell you that they need to drill a series of 10mm holes at an angle into the affected timbers, then pump a magic cream into these holes which will alledgedly poison them in their larval stage.
Finally they pop little plastic caps over the open ends of the damaging 10mm holes they've drilled into your structural frame berore then trying to get you to sign up to them returning time and time again to pop the caps back off and re-fill their drill holes with even more magic cream!
However, drilling a series of 10mm holes in the structural frame of the building will only weaken the frame itself, and if that building is Listed, then Listed Building Consent will be required which simply adds even more costs in existing and proposed Architect's drawings, Heritage statements, design & access statements before even submitting the application, and because of the impact on the structure you will get a refusal for sure!
Plus of course the 'specialists' won't do these return visits for free, and given that these are known to burrow and feed, in and on the timber for up to 12yrs! Meaning return visits can end up rather costly!
