Just a quick rant today - net zero.
We are told that we must be obsessed with saving the planet. But must we really?
The tree huggers have been hugging trees for decades, they clearly like flying virtue flags, because they're still hugging trees, while rain forests globally are still being slaughtered.
In the UK 24 years ago, a 5p "tax" was imposed on each carrier bag under David Cameron PM. Now a carrier bag costs us 30 - 50p each, so the 5p tax obviously didn't make carrier bags the reusable commodity as we were told it would, but more money was removed from our pockets by the government.
Taken from a report documented on the commons library, it states:
"The Welsh Government estimated that single use carrier bag use between 2011 and 2014 declined by 70%; Zero Waste Scotland estimated that the 7 major grocery retailers in Scotland used about 650 million fewer single use carrier bags in the first year of the charge in Scotland; and Northern Ireland reported a 71.8% reduction in plastic bag use in its first year. UK Government data indicates that for England, the 7 main retailers issued around 83% fewer bags (over 6 billion bags fewer) in 2016 to 2017, the first full year of operation of the charge, compared to the calendar year 2014.2 By 2023-24, the reduction compared to 2014 was 98%.3"
That all sounds lovely, but why then has the tax increased?
What have the government additionally improved with the additional money gained over the now 22 years worth of increased taxes?
Why are Ed Milibands spendings projected to be £125 million by 2030, when He hasn't achieved anything yet?
Why is there an obsession with 'net zero' ... really?
When we already show provable, sustainable construction methods, tried and tested for over 2000 years, many of which are CO² neutral, and the use of lime dates back 7500 years in the country known today as Jordan, according to archeology.
Should we be really going backwards, but someone 'accidentally' selected forward gears?
Just a short ramble today, but one that really speaks volumes to us.
Have a think.
