Machiavelli: did he predict the future?
There is so much about our history that shapes our future, so explore the foundations of our heritage, not just in structures but also in ideas.
This one may seem pointless, but people lived in histbuilt historic buildings a
during the times where many others lived, and could have influenced the building that you now occupy, and that's not pointless.
Dive into the world of Niccolò Machiavelli and ponder if his insights into power and human nature echo through the ages, even into the realm of traditional buildings.

Who was Niccolò Machiavelli?
Niccolò Machiavelli, was born in Tuscani, Florence, Italy, in 1469, He was a diplomat, a philosopher, a historian, and a writer during the Italian Renaissance period. The photo on our home page shows that Italian renaissance styled building in southern Ireland, with 48 bedrooms, plus a former boarding school and church added to the original house that occupied 125 acres of land. I lived in that building for 1 year whilst carrying out a lot of real restoration and conservation work (not today's assumtive interpretation), back in the 1980's, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
So knowing some history about Machiavelli certainly helped me; and here I am still referring to it 40 years later!
He is best known for his political treatise, The Prince, a work that controversially advised rulers on how to acquire and maintain power. His observations on human nature and statecraft have made his name synonymous with political cunning, but his influence extends far beyond mere politics.

Machiavelli's famous quotes and their modern resonance
Many of Machiavelli's powerful quotes offer profound insights that can be applied to various fields, including the meticulous work of conservation and restoration. Consider his saying, "The wise man does at once what the fool does finally." How might this apply to proactive building maintenance or the early detection of issues like wood rot or dry rot? I believe his wisdom encourages us to think strategically about preserving our built heritage.

Did he predict the future?
The timeless nature of Machiavelli's observations often lead me to wonder if he somehow possessed the ability to predict the future.
His understanding of human behaviour and power dynamics seems to transcend centuries. His words serve as a reminder of the cyclical nature of challenges and the importance of strategic thinking.
